Sports betting is incredibly popular in Canada, with a generally lenient attitude toward it. However, despite the enthusiasm for placing wagers and the regulated framework, it isn’t always straightforward for global operators to enter the market. This is largely due to each region having its own rules for granting operational permits to sportsbooks, with many being cautious about allowing external brands. Additionally, there are government-run operators that provide betting services to local players. We’ve previously covered the competition between local and international sportsbooks.
That said, the gradual liberalization and structured regulation of the market present new opportunities for both operators and players. For instance, Ontario has fully embraced global platforms, while the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory has been issuing permits to international operators for nearly two decades. Alberta is also expected to follow suit, potentially allowing external platforms in 2025.
Region-specific operators across the market
When discussing sports betting platforms, regionally developed ones deserve special attention. These platforms comply with local laws, cater to regional preferences, and ensure that generated revenue benefits the surrounding community. For instance, the Atlantic Lottery Corporation reported $487 million in net profits last year, which were distributed among four regions: Nova Scotia received $161.7 million, New Brunswick $151.2 million, Newfoundland and Labrador $147.3 million, and Prince Edward Island $26.8 million.
The Atlantic Lottery is just one example. Platforms like PlayNow operate successfully in British Columbia and Manitoba, benefiting from high levels of user trust and strict oversight. Similarly, Play Alberta ensures that legal wagering options are available while investing significantly in the regional economy. Other platforms, including Proline, Mise-o-Jeu, and Sport Select, contribute to the industry’s growth. For example, Proline, which operates in Ontario, offers a wide range of sports options while remaining accessible to users. Meanwhile, Mise-o-Jeu supports the sports culture in French-speaking Quebec.
These platforms have become an essential part of everyday life, offering both convenience and security while contributing to community development. Choosing region-specific platforms goes beyond safety and accessibility – it supports the growth of regional economies.
Global operators with regional permits
The regulation of betting platforms operates on a regional rather than a nationwide level, meaning that a permit in one area, such as Ontario, does not allow operations across the entire country. Operators can only function within the region where the permit was issued.
While using offshore sites is not prohibited, having a regional permit adds an extra layer of reliability. For example, Ontario’s regulatory body, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, conducts thorough evaluations of platforms before granting operational rights, ensuring that standards are met and user security is prioritized.
So, which operators are approved in specific regions? Ontario, known for its comprehensive regulatory framework, hosts a long list of authorized platforms. One prominent name is Bet365, a globally recognized operator offering an extensive range of wagering options and user-friendly withdrawal processes, making it a favourite among users.
Another noteworthy platform is 22Bet, which operates under a permit issued by the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory. This platform is known for its diverse offerings, particularly in esports, covering tournaments in games like Dota 2, CS:GO, League of Legends, and others. For those uninterested in major events, virtual tournaments provide an exciting alternative. The interface is intuitive, appealing to both beginners and seasoned players.
Additionally, 20Bet, approved by the Kahnawà:ke Gaming Commission, focuses on sports like hockey, American football, and basketball, which are widely popular. Although the platform lacks live video streaming and has limited esports options, it compensates by offering unique lines for cultural and social events, including elections and awards shows.
These are just a few examples of platforms that have gained the trust of players. Even if you’re outside Ontario or the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, many operators offer online access, ensuring options for all.
