March: Problem Gambling Awareness Month in Canada

We have previously discussed the issue of sports betting addiction. However, March is a special month dedicated to raising awareness about gambling-related problems in many countries, including Canada. That is why we are once again drawing attention to this important topic.
The statistics presented by experts are truly concerning. For instance, Matthew Young, a researcher at the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, stated during a Senate transport and communications committee hearing: “Seven percent of Canadians met the criteria for problem gambling.” The numbers are even more alarming among young people, with the addiction rate among Canadians aged 18 to 34 reaching 15%.
This data highlights the importance of discussing the issue, knowing where to seek help, and understanding how to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Why do people become addicted to gambling and betting?
Problem gambling is not just a lack of willpower – it is a complex condition that requires understanding and support. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, it is classified alongside alcohol and drug dependence. In other words, for some individuals, sports betting triggers the same pleasure centres in the brain as alcohol or illegal substances.
Why do some people become addicted quickly while others gamble and bet without adverse outcomes? The answer lies in a combination of factors:
- Biological predisposition. Genetics plays a crucial role. Individuals with a family history of addiction are at a higher risk of developing gambling problems. Brain function characteristics are also important – some people experience a stronger dopamine release from gambling activities than most, making them more vulnerable.
- Psychological factors. People who struggle with impulsivity, anxiety, or depression are more prone to addiction. If gambling becomes a coping mechanism for stress, the risk increases. Those who are aware of the dangers and can regulate their behaviour are less likely to develop an addiction.
- Social environment. If betting and casino games are common among family and friends, an individual may quickly accept them as normal. Economic stability also plays a role – people experiencing financial difficulties may see gambling as a way to earn money, which increases the risk of addiction.
- Accessibility. The easier it is to place a bet (for example, through online bookmakers), the higher the likelihood of developing compulsive gambling. Advertising and marketing also contribute to this issue, as we previously discussed in another article.
As you can see, problem gambling results from a complex interaction of multiple factors. Some individuals are more vulnerable due to biological or psychological traits, while others are influenced by their environment. If you or someone you know is struggling with this issue, do not hesitate to seek professional help.
Where to seek assistance?
In this article, we discussed how to recognize when it’s time to get help and the challenges that compulsive bettors face. Now, let’s talk about where to turn if you find it difficult to control your gambling habits.
Canada offers strong support systems for people struggling with gambling disorders. For example, the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has developed the GameSense program. The website provides educational resources on how to protect yourself from addiction, where to seek help, and how to regain control if gambling and betting have become a problem.
There are other specialized services in Canada, such as:
- ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600) – Offers counselling and referrals to specialized organizations.
- Ontario Problem Gambling Helpline (1-888-230-3505) – Provides assistance for those struggling with gambling-related issues.
- The Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) – A nonprofit organization that helps individuals overcome addiction and provides educational materials.
Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of resources. Each province and territory has hotlines that offer anonymous support.
What if you’re hesitant to seek help?
Despite the availability of numerous support options, many individuals struggling with gambling addiction do not seek assistance. Fear of judgment, shame, or misunderstanding often holds them back. You might be worried about others finding out about your problem or doubt whether help will be effective. Perhaps you have had a negative experience in the past or don’t believe you actually have an issue. The idea of changing familiar habits can also be intimidating – many people fear stepping out of their comfort zone, even when it is destructive. This is completely normal.
However, it is essential to remember that seeking support is not a sign of weakness – it is the first step toward changing your life for the better. Start small: talk to someone you trust, look for anonymous resources where you can get help without fear of judgment. Remember, you are not alone – many have already gone through this journey. These people understand you better than anyone and can help you overcome your fears. The power to improve your life is in your hands!
